In collaboration with the Student Involvement Program Assistant, Volunteer Team Leaders make sure that students registered to volunteer for a Days of Service event are made welcome, given the information they need for their role, and thanked for their contribution. They must, among other tasks, meet and guide volunteers to the venue, keep track of attendees, and maintain contact with student participants to ensure a safe and successful activity. They collect and communicate valuable information to the Student Involvement Program Assistant and the community partner, and actively work to spread the word about other volunteering initiatives.

Days of Service is a new initiative offering short volunteer placements on campus and in the greater Montreal community. It is designed to be a fun, social way to connect students with their peers while having a meaningful impact within the community that does not require a long-term commitment. To participate, student volunteers need to meet the requirements of the host organizations. Placements revolve around three main sectors: environment, vulnerable populations, and community development.

Responsibilities:

  • Communicate effectively with CL&E staff and the community partner
  • Meet students and guide them to the venue
  • Seek clarification on tasks as needed
  • Help the community partner coordinate McGill participants onsite, including safety and security aspects
  • Be a point of contact for student volunteers if they have questions
  • Promote the Days of Service initiatives (to help recruit)
  • Confirm student attendance, provide post-event feedback and suggestions to the CL&E team by email after the activity
  • Be a role model, motivate participants during the event, and encourage them to participate in other volunteering opportunities

Qualifications:

  • Previous volunteering experience
  • Experience working and/or leading a team is an asset
  • Ability to be focused, flexible, empathetic and work in a busy environment
  • Excellent communication skills, both oral and written
  • Demonstrated attention to details and time management skills

Why volunteer?

Volunteering is beneficial for both your physical and mental health. It helps reduce isolation and depression, as you build interpersonal connections when you volunteer with others. Additionally, you could make new friends and increase your social network, which would in turn help to boost your self confidence!
