INDG 450: Land-Based Education

Indigenous Studies is once again running our summer field course, INDG 450, from July 8th until August 5th. This course focuses on Rotinonhsonni land-based pedagogies, Ohén:ton Karihwátehkwen (words before all else) as well as stories to engage in various topics of Indigenous Studies. Land-based practices, guest speakers, trips around the city and in community, will be used to engage student in the learning process. The class is taught by Gabrielle Iakotennikonhrare Doreen, the faculty lecturer in Indigenous Studies, who has a master's in land-based education from the University of Saskatchewan. USask is one of the leaders in this emerging field.

Gabrielle Doreen

Gabrielle Doreen is Kanien’kehá:ka from Tyendinaga Mohawk Territory. Her Mohawk name is Iakotennikonhrare, which translates to she watches over them. She attended Shatiwennakaratats Adult Immersion program in 2008, and has worked in different language capacities in her community, including immersion school teacher and language nest apprentice. Gabrielle has earned her Masters from the University of Saskatchewan focusing on Indigenous Land-Based Education. Gabrielle is a mother of four sons and has a grandchild. In her spare time, she likes to garden, kayak, bead, and make corn husk dolls.
