International Women in Mathematics Day - Secrets of the Surface: The Mathematical Vision of Maryam Mirzakhani

In 2018, May 12, the date of birth of Maryam Mirzakhani, was declared Women in Mathematics Day. In her honor, and to raise awareness of achievements of women in mathematics, we are hosting 2 events:

• Thursday, May 9 at 6:00 pm (UQAM - with registration fee): Screening of the filmSecrets of the Surface: The Mathematical Vision of Maryam Mirzakhan (in collaboration with the Cœur des sciences at UQAM), followed by a discussion panel;
• Friday, May 10 at 3:30 pm (CRM - no registration needed): Colloquium given by Dr. Sara Faridi (Dalhousie University), followed by a reception.

  THURSDAY, MAY 9: Screening of the film Secrets of the surface: The Mathematical Vision of Maryam Mirzakhani

  About: This is the captivating story of the life and work of Maryam Mirzakhani, an Iranian mathematician who immigrated to the United States. In 2014, she was the first woman to receive the prestigious Fields Medal, the highest award in mathematics. Her journey, her successes and her constant passion for her discipline make her an inspiring role model. In this film, mathematicians from all over the world, former teachers, classmates and students from today's Iran, express the profound influence of Maryam's achievements. This documentary was written and directed by George Csicsery.
