Our century is not the first to experience disruptive change. Victorians witnessed vast societal shifts, scientific and technological advances, colonial expansion, and accelerating speeds of transportation, communication and dissemination of information. Crime and policing also increased in the Victorian era, with the detective figure—in life and art—emerging as one attempt to assuage social anxiety.
Explore how Victorians navigated the thrill and trepidation of rapid change. Can you detect a trace of your world in theirs?
